Seaside Tactical Urbanism at Echo Avenue
In association with the Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) at CSU Monterey Bay and the City of Seaside our capstone group will use tactical urbanism to promote an inclusive community. Seaside Tactical Urbanism aims to use the creativity of tactical urbanism to empower the community to take back their streets. Tactical Urbanism is “is an approach to neighborhood building that uses short-term, low-cost, and scalable interventions and policies to catalyze long term change” (http://tacticalurbanismguide.com/). Tactical Urbanism along Echo Avenue will create safer walking conditions, slow traffic, and create space for a parklet for locals to gather and enjoy their city.
Tactical urbanism traditionally has four stages (demonstration, pilot, interim design, & long-term/capital), but due to time constraints our project focused on the demonstration and pilot stages with the hopes of the community pushing the project into the interim design and long-term stages. In accordance with the SCYP Business capstone, the first annual Seaside Community Day was held on Echo Ave. in April 21, 2018 to celebrate the launch of the pilot stage. We succeeded in constructing a crosswalk extension, adding a new crosswalk, and installing a temporary parklet on Echo Avenue for the Seaside Community Day event. Click below for more details. |
